Portland, OR (January 23, 2022) – Two people were transported to an area hospital with injuries following a motor vehicle accident in the Portland area on Saturday morning, January 22.
At around 12:40 a.m., two Portland Police Bureau officers were stopped at a red light on Southeast 122nd Avenue near Southeast Division Street when they witnessed a BMW blow through the red light. As police officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver continued traveling through the area at a high rate of speed.
As the vehicle ran another red light on Southeast 122nd Avenue at the intersection of Southeast Powell Boulevard, it collided with a Nissan. The impact of the crash caused the BMW to roll over several times before catching on fire.
The driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Alejandro R. Velazquez, fled the scene of the accident on foot. He was apprehended by police and arrested.
A 21-year-old passenger in the BMW and the 25-year-old driver of the Nissan were both rushed to area hospitals for the treatment of serious injuries.
At this time, the incident remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the two victims who were injured in this accident. We hope for their full recovery.
