Fatal Pedestrian Crashes in Oregon
Fatal car crashes in our state continue to take the lives of innocent people every year. Regrettably, many people lose their lives as a result of drivers who are negligent. Leading factors in fatal pedestrian collisions that we see here in the state of Oregon include:
- Distractions: When a driver is distracted, they’re not paying attention to their surroundings and may not see a pedestrian in the crosswalk or even running towards the curb. Drivers should always be aware of their surroundings and be on the lookout for pedestrians, especially in areas where there are lots of people walking around.
- Failure to yield: Drivers who don’t yield the right of way to pedestrians can cause serious accidents. Pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks and intersections, so drivers need to be careful when making turns or changing lanes.
- Running red lights: A car that’s speeding through a red light is much more likely to hit a pedestrian than one that’s stopped at the light. Even if the pedestrian isn’t hit by the car, they could still be injured if they’re knocked down by the force of the car passing by.
