Columbia County, OR – Crash with Humvee on Highway 30 Takes Life of Gonzalo Martinez III

Columbia County, OR (February 22, 2023) – A National Guardsman died due to a motor vehicle accident in Columbia County on Sunday evening, February 19.

At approximately six p.m., a traveling convoy was heading along Highway 30 when it experienced a mechanical issue. As a result, the convoy stopped along the shoulder of the roadway.

One person in the vehicle exited in order to determine what caused the issue. As the g guardsmen exited the vehicle, he was struck by a Chevrolet pickup truck that was traveling east on the roadway near mile marker 60.

The guardsmen, identified as Gonzalo Martinez III, and the driver of the pickup, identified as Richard Erickson, were both transported to area hospitals for emergency care.

Authorities confirmed that Martinez, age 29, passed away from his injuries after arriving.

Erickson, age 72, remains hospitalized.

The Oregon State Police are actively investigating the accident.
